Alice - Apprentice Engineer

The curious mind

Alice fixed the rear cargo door access panel back on the A320, double-checking everything as she went. There was nothing like the feeling of a job well done. Growing up, she'd always had a natural curiosity about how things worked. Now that she had a fleet of advanced aircraft systems to challenge her, life felt pretty good.

Being the only female engineering apprentice for a year hadn't bothered her. The team at the hangar were a tight-knit bunch and everyone made her feel welcome. They all shared the same passion and talking tech with everyone helped her feel right at home.

Three years in, she'd already seen lots of change at Jetstar – new planes and technology. But what didn't change was the family feel and being recognised for being you. Even better, there were more female apprentices joining every year.

'Alice, got five minutes to help me with this?' came a shout from across the hangar. It was a senior member of the team working on new system updates. It was music to Alice's ears

The big deadline

'Kia Ora! Welcome to New Zealand,' said the customs officer, handing Alice her passport. She was excited. Working overseas was cool enough but Jetstar were launching new services including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and a big responsibility lay ahead. Her team needed to set up tool and parts storage for the engineers, as well as make sure all the paperwork was running smoothly.

The pressure was on, but as the taxi drove towards Auckland, Alice felt herself relax. Delivering to a deadline had become second nature after three years at Jetstar, plus she had her good friend David to help. She was already thinking about her next trip here in three months to work on the launch of regional services. One thing was certain – she was having the time of her life.
