I joined Jetstar Japan in April 2019 as a graduate, and it will soon be four years since I was assigned to the Finance Department in August 2020.
I joined Jetstar Japan in April 2019 as a graduate, and it will soon be four years since I was assigned to the Finance Department in August 2020.
As one of the four members in the FP&A team, I work on budget control with several departments and teams. My role is to analyze the difference between budgets and results each month, prepare annual forecasts and report on our financial situation to stakeholders. I oversee finance for Engineering & Maintenance, Commercial, People, and IT. Sometimes it’s difficult to understand their work or technical terms, so I ask and learn from my counterparts who are responsible for the budget in each department and colleagues in the FP&A team.
In the first half of each month, I review and report to the executive team, shareholders, and relevant departments on the variance between the budget and results for the previous month. I also share the variance between the forecast and results. I feel rewarded when I analyze discrepancies, identify their causes, and explain to those involved. I would like to focus more on cost reduction, such as making proposals based on different analysis as well as feedback from the relevant departments. I could then create reports that will clarify the results of each department.
When I joined the company, I was interested in working in the network team, so one of the rewards of being an FP&A analyst is working with the route profitability manager in the Finance Department at Jetstar’s head office where each month we review route performance with the Commercial department.
Some expenses incur every year, while others incur on a multi-year cycle, making the task more complicated. We are currently in the process of finalizing the FY25 budget, and with the help of each department, we will soon get it approved by the executive team.
Since FP&A work is completed in the office, I haven’t had the opportunity to duty travel to our destinations or Jetstar’s head office in Melbourne yet, so I would like to broaden my horizons by supporting events outside of work moving forward. I would love to participate in customer events or tree planting events for the “Star Trees” program
